artofislam: Magnetism - Saudi contemporary artist, Ahmed Mater utilizes iron filings and a magnet to create a simple yet captivating and striking installation of pilgrims circling (tawaf) the Ka’bah (house of God). The overall aim of the artist is simple, but much like the central focus; is compellingly attractive. Muslims pray towards the Ka’bah 5 times a day and the slightest twist of the magnet by Mater recreates the central act of tawaf and people lined in prayer. Thousands of Muslims perform tawaf on a daily basis; including as part of the Hajj and Umrah rituals. This consists of going around the Ka’bah 7 time’s counter clock-wise reciting any form of prayer such as dhikr, tasbeeh and Quran. Ultimately, Maters work adds a modern touch to this religious ritual and its importance in Islam and to Muslims around the world. © Art.Islam.Life
